A few nights before I had to leave I had some inspiration for a new quilt pattern project. I was really just fooling around with some of the fabrics I love like Wee Play from American Jane and Lake House. Before I knew it, I was showing off a unique and really fun quilted product. So unique that I had not really thought about how it could be used. Was it a tabletop? Was it a quilted rug? Was it a quilted diaper changing pad? I just knew I loved how it looked and it was so easy.

I originally called it the “Daisy Dew……..and a little pooh” because I really thought it was a super fun baby changing pad. You know, in the haste to get packed, I didn’t take a photo or have time to put it on our Threaded Pear patterns brochure. I liked it so much I made three samples and when we got to our booth at Quilt Market, I “dropped” them on the Astroturf like flowers in a field. For the rest of the show, I called it the “Daisy Dew Drop.”

As I wrote on Quiltersbuzz:

Of all the things that hung in the Threaded Pear Studio booth (including the long johns on the line), nothing drew more “oohs” and “ahhs” and “where can I get one?” than the Daisy Dew Drop. Several visitors said it was the freshest idea at the show. Despite the great reception, feedback and orders for our quilt and apron patterns - all the work, all the piecing, professional photography and quilting that went into nine quilt patterns and three apron patterns couldn’t match the popularity of Daisy Dew Drop for pure crowd appeal.

I love the Daisy Drew Drop because it is functional and a completely different way to look at making a quilt. It also focuses on fabric. I guess it is unique for a few reasons.

• It is made from whole cloth – no pieces—just a simple appliquéd center.
• Two fabrics front and back, a cute center and bit of rick-rack or other embellishment and batting. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
• It can be “dropped” wherever you want – floor table, bed or hung
• There is rubber backing that you can buy and “paint” on the back, so it truly can become an adorable rug if you want. (I know United Notions carries it, I think I sold ba-zillion jars of it because there booth was next to mine and I was talking all about it.)
• It can also be a small snuggler quilt and be “dropped” in front of the TV.
• The drop can also become the perfect practice piece for your own machine quilting. Quilt away without worrying about a piecing project that took a lot of time to piece.
• Plus, it is just dang cute!
• Oh yeah, and it is easy to clean and can be “dropped” in the washing machine time after time.

Since coming back from Quilt Market, I have been busy putting together the pattern for the Daisy Drew Drop. I will include patterns for all three designs as seen in our booth at Quilt Market. You can see them on our website currently and the patterns will be available at Threaded Pear by the first part of June.

It is fun to create something that really makes people stop and take a look. I already have started thinking about other Drop designs so check back for a preview.

We hung a wash line across the front and hung some long, red underwear from the line with Threaded Pear across the back. Add an antique washtub, a wheel barrow and some flowers and Astroturf and you have a little back yard motif. We heard many great comments.

The fun continued with our embellished overalls. Each year we come with a different themed outfit. It is fun to dress up and it always draws attention to Threaded Pear. I am afraid it has become an expectation. But we always deliver!

Sample Spree is a two-hour frenzy the night before Quilt Market opens for exhibits. From 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, every vendor gets a six foot table to sell their wares - “samples” of their products. We sold a finished quilt sample called “Moore Americana” and a pack of 12 “Moore Americana” patterns at a “show special” price – below wholesale. Sample Spree is an awesome opportunity for a quilt shop owner to score some goods and to go home on Monday with a quilt sample to display at their shop. You can’t believe the crowds and the amount of business that happens in such a short period. The women at the front of the line had been there for four hours waiting for the doors to open.

My friends and Threaded Pear contributors (from left to right) - Stephanie, Kaye, me  and Tina - helped out tremendously with booth set up in the Quilt Market exhibition hall and then Sample Spree selling. We fancied up some overalls with Wee Play fabric from American Jane. The gals from Threaded Pear Studio were easy to find.
